For the first time today, I went to the 'women only' fitness swimming time slot at the Bedford Metropolitan pool. I never really thought about what exactly to expect, I just thought about how it would be nice to be free from feeling stared at under the water.
When I got to the gym, the window that faces into the pool from the lobby was covered up with

Getting in shape
What I've done the past 7 days:
Last night (Thursday) I went to a brick workout: bike 1 loop of the park (3.35 miles) and then run 1 mile. I repeated the bike 3 times and the run 2 times ( I ran out of time ). On Thursday morning, I went to the gym to strength train. I did all the machines for upper and lower body as well as ab work.. I had not done the strength work in 3-4 weeks. I noticed new muscles in my calves that I had never seen before.
On Wednesday I went to a speed running workout group. After warming up and doing various dynamic stretches, we did hill repeats with a twist: we ran backwards 2/3 of the hill and then spun around and sprinted the rest of the way back up the hill. I was able to do 2 1/2 hill repeats. I did not do the last sprint because the group was already stretching.

New Things
Just as I was going to start writing on my chosen topic, I hesitated, thinking that if anyone were to be reading this, they wouldn't want to read about insecurities regarding people; people would only want to read about things directly related to triathlon - maybe even fears, but not 'lack of social skills' or feelings of ineptness at club meetings. But, that is a big thing for me and could potentially interfere in

My first speed group workout
Last night I went to my first speed group workout thru the tri group I belong to. Prior to going, I came up with so many reasons not to go: my knee hurts; it's drizzling; too cold etc. I went anyway. I thought about my goals for doing well in the Brooklyn Half on May 21, and if I keep on postponing this speedwork, I will not accomplish the goal. Also, the primary REAL reason I was hesitating to go is

2 months left
63 days to be exact, until the Black Bear Triathlon. Just came home from a 30 mile bike ride from home (Park Slope, Brooklyn) to the George Washington Bridge lighthouse, and back. It was difficult, but faster than the last time I did it on March 13th. My how time flies! I'm still not set up to change flats - I'm riding on faith right now. Faith and the knowledge that here in NYC, I am not too far from the subway at any point during my bike ride. Nonetheless.... While riding this morning, I made the decision - commitment - to start going to a speed work running group, that meets every Wednesday night. I made the commitment to go between now and the BB tri. I had hesitated due to another activity that I usually do on Wednesdays, but I will work around it for the next 2 months. Tomorrow we are running in the More Half Marathon. I hope to ride my bike there in the morning, so I can have a another brick under my belt. This is more in preparation for the Pocono HIM in October - 6 months from now!

Spring Duathlon Race Report
On March 19, 2011 I did a 'Classic distance' duathlon 5kR/14mB/5k.
My time was:
5k Run: 33:46 (pace 10:54) 14m Bike: 52:38 (16mph) and 5k run 35:42 (11:32 pace).
I had estimated 36 minutes for the 5k's and 1hour for the bike. So I did better than that, and so I am happy about that.
Prior to the race, I had been pretty nervous about my nutrition during the race and pacing. I ended up eating a gel right before the start of the run. There was no warm up time, just 'START'.! Then the first thing that came up was this huge hill - it turned out afterwards that I reached my max HR in the first few minutes - 185. It was a pretty hilly route through the walking paths of Prospect Park in Brooklyn. Towards the end of the 5k, there was a pinnacle that you reached on a mountain where you could see the landscape of the surrounding Brooklyn neighborhoods. I ran

Heart Rate Monitor training
There are so many different opinions out there on how to train for a triathlon. One of these is training using a heart rate monitor. If you google heart rate monitor training, you can find various opinions on how to determine your maximum heart rate, and there are sites that say it's too dangerous to try finding your maximum heart rate. Many sites concur that using the generic formula of 220-your age
